Cold-Buster Smoothie

What’s worse than getting sick? Getting sick in the spring/summer. At least in the winter you expect it, you know? Bad weather always equals runny noses and sore throats and germs spreading everywhere. Which is why I always get extra frustrated when I get sick in the spring or summer; I’m never expecting it and also all the usual cold remedies are catered to the colder weather. Hot tea or soup just doesn’t feel right when it’s warm and sunny outside. Enter: the cold-buster smoothie.

Towards the end of my trip last weekend I started to feel the beginnings of a cold and by the time I got home I was full on sick. But I had to get back to work and school started and I couldn’t afford to waste time laying in bed (although that did sound really good). Whenever I’m sick I get a little obsessive about eating a ton of vitamin C and foods that are good for boosting your immune system, so I decided to incorporate a bunch of these things in to one smoothie. Plus it tastes like an orange creamsicle, which I am all about.

There are a lot of things that make this smoothie great: tons of vitamin C from the orange/orange juice and the mango, healthy probiotics from the yogurt, and ginger and turmeric which are both anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants. But also, feel free to experiment yourself! Don’t like turmeric? Leave it out. Or maybe try adding some greens (I’ve added spinach and it’s great!). My favourite thing about smoothies is that there are no rules – do what you like, do what feels right for you.


1 orange, peeled
1/4 C frozen mango chunks
1/4 inch knob of ginger, peeled
1/4 C of yogurt (I like the taste of coconut or greek)
1/4 C almond milk
1/4 C orange juice
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp turmeric
6-7 ice cubes


Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until totally smooth.
