Home Inspo: The Art of the ‘Shelfie’

I think it’s safe to say that I am both a book junkie and also a packrat – I’m sort of one of those people who accumulates things. So maybe I’m a little biased (or this is how I justify things) but I tend to think that your belongings – especially your books – ought to be shown. What’s the point of having stuff if you aren’t going to show it off? But just throwing things on your shelves can make things look cluttered or messy. So here are my tips on nailing that elusive perfect shelfie.

Embrace Your Style

I’ve always thought that your books say a lot about who you are, so it’s no surprise that your shelves do, too. They are your shelves after all. In that vain, don’t be scared to show off your personal style and taste. Include your favourite books or fun family pictures or knick knacks from your travels. Plus, the more you let your shelves reflect your style, the more likely they’ll flow with the rest of your space.

Look At the Shelf as a Whole

When you’re putting together your shelf it’s important to remember that it will be seen as a whole unit instead of individual little sections. You want it to look cohesive, even if you don’t want it to look super matchy-matchy. I would recommend first gathering all the items you think that you want to use and look at them all grouped together in order to see if they all work with each other. Then begin to assemble by placing the large items on the shelves first and filling the spaces with smaller items. This will help you continue to work on the shelves as a unit rather than going shelf by shelf which could cause things to look a little disjointed.

Have Fun With It

Don’t forget that these are just shelves – it’s not life or death over here. Try something out and let it sit for a little while. If you don’t end up loving it, change it! I think it’s best to go in thinking of this as a constant work in progress. It’s never going to feel 100% perfect so just go with what you’re feeling and play around. Mix and match items, try different colour schemes. And don’t be afraid to layer!

The Shelfie Isn’t Just Reserved for the Living Room

Utilize shelving all over – your kitchen, your closet, your bathroom. Show off your creativity and create a striking display in an unexpected way! I think we’re all a little guilty of letting the lesser seen areas of our homes become much more functional as opposed to stylish, but there’s no reason they can’t be both. Don’t be afraid to play around!
