You guys, I have a new television obsession. I know what you’re probably thinking: “really, what else is new?” But this obsession is real. Sense8 has been on my radar since it first came out but I never put that much effort in to getting into it. But when the Christmas special came out I ended up watching it with my mom and I was super intrigued. I decided to wait until season 2 was released, and then I would binge the whole thing (which I have now done). The show itself has a really interesting plot that is also refreshingly original; I have to be honest and say that I’m getting tired of seeing book and movie adaptations/comic book remakes/the same, tired supernatural plot over and over again. The show is about eight individuals who are located all over the world who, after each experiencing a violent vision, share a mysterious and unique connection. Because of this rare ability to connect with one another, they find themselves being hunted by a surreptitious organization.
The show, aside from being incredibly impressive for its seamless editing (they make it seem like 8 different people are moving as one), is an example of a show that does representation and diversity correctly. Not only does it depict different races, genders, sexuality, faiths, etc., it does so in a way that makes it completely normal; I appreciate that these aspects are part of who each character is and that they are included and accepted and that’s that. I’m also impressed with just how diverse the show really is – I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much diversity on TV before. It’s also really cool that they actually shoot on location rather than just some studio in LA. I think all of these things, combined with the fact that at its core this show is about human beings, work together to create a real sense of authenticity and reality that is missing from television.
I’ve never been the kind of person to advocate for anything that takes two years to get updated (I’m an instant gratification kind of gal) but this show is worth it. I honestly think it may be Netflix’s best original series and if you haven’t yet, go watch it. And then come right back here so we can gossip and discuss it at length.
